What is Spiritual Mentoring?

Spiritual Mentoring is for those of you who are at the beginning of your Spiritual Journey and want to find out what is the best next step. You will also benefit from Spiritual Mentoring if you are a spiritual practitioner who feels they need a bit of support on where to take their practice next.

The primary benefit of mentoring is having someone hold you accountable and access to a person who has walked the path before you.

What is a Spiritual Mentor?

The dictionary defines a mentor as an experienced and trusted adviser.

In Greek mythology, Mentor comes from the Odessey, where Athena takes the place of Mentor offering practical advice to Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Following this, many languages adopted mentor as the word to describe someone who imparts wisdom and shares knowledge. The first use of the word as this can be found in 1699 in Les Aventures de Télémaque by the French writer François Fénelon.

Here at the institute, we use the word Mentor in this way, although here, we focus on spiritual mentoring.

We see a Spiritual Mentor as someone who has developed a strong sense of their personal spirituality and is able to communicate their knowledge in such as way that it is useful to the mentee. Our approach to mentoring is fairly non-directive, meaning we believe that each individual need to do the work to build their sense of spirituality and not simply adopt ours.

All our mentors are experienced within the spiritual space and have benefited greatly from having access to a spiritual mentor.

Our founder to has had a Spiritual Mentor since 2013, and this was Ines Nicholson. Ines’s husband, Owen, was her mentor.

Tor has now helped many individuals on their journey.

Spiritual Mentoring can be very useful at the beginning because the spiritual space can often be incredibly confusing, strange and inaccessible.

Tor says, “Having Ines as a Spiritual Mentor has been invaluable to me. Her approach to spirituality is down-to-earth, practical and straightforward without much fuzz. Just hard work, really, and that suits me incredibly well. To have her as a sounding board has helped my mind out of many confusing moments.

I now thrive on supporting up-and-coming spiritual seekers who are keen to grow within this space. I love being able to support other people on their journey as they find their way through it.

My mentoring approach is non-directive, yet I will give advice and suggestions and help the mentee build a plan to move forward at a pace that works for them.

I’d say my approach to spirituality is also very practical, without much paraphernalia and fluff.”

What to expect from Spiritual Mentoring?

Most people who sign up for Spiritual Mentoring sign up for five sessions, although one stand-alone session can be very beneficial too.

The mentee can use the space in whatever way they would prefer, and the benefits of mentoring are many.

Benefits of Spiritual Mentoring:

  • Spiritual Growth
  • Clarity
  • Enhanced confidence
  • Decrease anxiety and worry
  • Improved intuition
  • Improved healing abilities
  • Improved psychic abilities
  • Accountability

The five sessions typically run like this:

In the first session, we investigate what the mentee is looking to achieve with the spiritual mentoring, and it’s also an opportunity to get to know each other.

In the second session, we will review what the mentee did between sessions one and two and see if any of the goals have changed. We also agree on a plan moving forward.

During the third and fourth sessions, we review how the mentee is getting on with their goals and leave time for open dialogue.

In the fifth session, we check in on the mentee’s progress and if they want to continue with the mentoring moving forward.

What can a mentor help me with?

Having a mentor can be transformative because there is someone present who holds you accountable and ensures that you move forward with your progress. Very often, all we need is someone to hold us accountable.
